Roger Greer
Quality Department – Ripon, Wisconsin
At Walsworth, my current title is Quality/Lean Supervisor. I manage our location’s quality systems and resource materials with a strong focus on collaboration and process improvement.
When I started in Ripon, I was looking for a position that was more stable and I was tired of all the traveling around the country I did in my previous job. Printing seemed like an industry to make a career.
This year will be my 25th year working in Ripon.
I started out in the company as a saddlestitch operator on second shift way back in 1997. I transitioned to a full-time position as a Lean Enterprise Facilitator in 2007. In 2011, I went back to second shift in a crew leader position until 2015 when I was given the position of Quality Resource Director.
I am married to my wonderful wife Amber, who I met working here, and we have 3 daughters, Madalyn (18), Stella (16) and Norah (12). We have one female dog Sammy who is a Vizsla/Weimaraner mix. I am the lone male in the household.
Walsworth provides a steady income so I can provide for my family. That money gets spent partially in our small local community to help benefit other small businesses.
When I’m not at work, I try to support our local community business as much as possible. I am a blood donor and Adopt-a-Highway volunteer.
I enjoy home improvement projects, kayak fishing, camping, whittling and carving. I love to cook and I would definitely consider myself a “foodie.” I also like visiting craft breweries – thank you craft beer for making my drinking a hobby 😊
A fun fact about me is my family likes to dress up in full costume on Halloween to hand out candy to the hundreds of kids who come to our neighborhood trick-or-treating. Also, I hate cooked apples. Why are they so mushy and gross?
A favorite memory of mine at Walsworth was when I once played an April Fool’s Day prank on a co-worker. I made a screenshot of his computer’s desktop and then made that the background for the desktop. I removed his folders and icons then watched him click and click trying to get things to open, but they were just pictures of the icons. We had a good long laugh after I let him in on the joke.
Day to day, a lot of my job is dealing with problems, or “opportunities,” as we like to call them. Whether it is working proactively with customers to get their pieces designed to have the best quality or reactively coming up with solutions to challenges we are encountering.
In my position, I love solving mysteries. When we have an issue with something but do not know what happened. It could be strange marking on a piece or a print defect. I go on a quest to figure out whatdunit. I look for clues, come up with a list of suspects, develop theories, test those theories, and hopefully find the culprit.
If I had a personalized coffee mug at work, it would say “Of course I talk to myself. Sometimes I need expert advice.”
I come to work because the people I work with every day are great.
