Steve Berg
Commercial Sales Representative, West Coast
My position at Walsworth is in Commercial Sales, representing the company on the West Coast. I would describe my position as a Walsworth representative to the publishing markets that best fit our manufacturing capabilities.
I have been employed at Walsworth approaching nine years. I began my printing industry career in the summer of 1980, over 40 years ago in a massive printing plant in Buffalo, New York. I began selling print services for Walsworth after selling for another large printing company that was then acquired by its competitor. I was fortunate to be offered a commercial sales position at Walsworth at the time.
My favorite part of print sales is the variability of the different customers you work with. It is most fun getting to meet in person and spend time with prospective or actual customers. The personal touch is what keeps the sales process moving forward and prevents your job from stagnating.
If I had a personalized coffee mug, it would say… Well, I am not a big fan of coffee mugs. However, if it reminded me to be persistent, stay positive and don’t easily give up, that would be appropriate. Or, it could simply have a Corgi picture, and that would be all I need.
I come to work every day to make something happen, mostly a new business sale. The pleasure of closing a deal, and subsequently keeping the presses running and people working, is the best incentive there is.
In my free time, I stay active outdoors which is easy in San Diego where I reside. I love our Corgi dog, and can’t stop laughing when playing ball with such an intense critter. I play tennis and ride a road bicycle as much as possible. We also love movies in theaters and live theater. We’re fortunate to have a tremendous amount of excellent live theater and cultural events in So Cal. I like traveling internationally and visiting family and friends across the country.
A fun fact about me is that I’ve lived extensively in the East, the Midwest and the West, and I’ve been to every state except one. I believe that having lived in many different locations has helped me be patient with others and gain new friends wherever I am.
I have been wonderfully married to Amy for 43 years. She’s the best person to ask about my print industry observations! My daughter Mara is 33, lives in Brooklyn and loves NYC. Eli is 30 and lives in San Diego, he’s a scratch golfer. Gregory is 28, a serious surfer, and lives as an online digital nomad in South America. Our Corgi is Millie, she’s a love.
Walsworth has been a wonderful and caring employer for me. The company has enabled me to have a diverse portfolio of customers in different businesses and locations. I have experienced working with many different personalities which better equips me to handle varying situations as time goes on.
I give back to my community by doing ongoing volunteer work with my community HOA and assisting with the recreational amenities where I live. My wife and I volunteer at Kitchens For Good, managing their food concessions at outdoor music events.
My favorite memories of working at Walsworth are the sales meetings, which are memorable, and especially customer plant visits because I get to meet and know the people I mostly email or talk on the phone with!
